Employer: Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
Internship Title: Research Assistant
Describe your duties:
Myself and the other RAs did a lot of data collecting (going out into Harvard Squard and getting passersby to fill out surveys or running studies in the laboratory). We also coded and entered that data and were somewhat involved in the analysis. The position also involved a mini "class" where we read articles during the week, wrote thought papers about them and discussed them with various grad-students and post-docs involved with the lab.
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I really enjoyed the first-hand experience at a major research institution. The atmosphere was totally different there, and it was a fantastic opportunity to find out what things are like at that level.
What did you enjoy least about your internship?
Well, the pay was non-existent, which was not my favorite aspect of the job, especially considering how expensive it is to live in Cambridge.
What is the most significant thing you learned about yourself as a result of the internship?
The most significant thing was probably that the experience really solidified my career goals-I went in thinking this (grad school, research, the whole shebang) was what I wanted to do, and now I'm sure.
What recommendations do you have for other students considering doing an internship?
Don't be afraid! Put yourself out there and be confident-it only makes it more likely that other people will become confident in you too.
