LEWISBURG, Pa. — Four members of the Bucknell University staff were honored at the annual staff picnic recently with the Geiger and Zeller Awards.

Geiger Awards
The Geiger Award recognizes members of the administrative staff who demonstrate sustained excellence and embrace Bucknell University's core competencies in the conduct of their administrative responsibilities. It honors the late Walter C. Geiger, former director of facilities.

Recipients of the 2011 Geiger Awards were Jim Hostetler, director of construction and design, and Jim Knight, associate director of energy and utilities.

Hostetler, who has been Bucknell for 25 years, leads a team of project engineers for all university construction projects, on campus and downtown. During the past year, the facilities projects included the construction of the new bookstore downtown, the instructional golf facility, and the new postal facility along Route 45, construction for Academic West, and a wide range of remodeling projects including the post office and DeWitt buildings downtown. Hostetler also served as a volunteer with student organizations such as the Outing Club and ClimBucknell.

Knight oversees the operation of the cogeneration plant, spearheading several major projects during the past year designed to save energy and fiscal resources. Projects included the design of the utility infrastructure for university projects to be placed south of the library. He obtained a grant in support of energy saving upgrades to HVAC equipment, oversaw Bucknell's participation in a program that reduced campus electrical usage, and redefined the responsibilities of several staff positions to provide a campus energy manager in support of the Bucknell Climate Action Plan. He also mentors students working on environmental initiatives.

Zeller Awards
Named in honor of the late John F. Zeller, former vice president for business and fiscal affairs and general counsel emeritus, the Zeller Award recognizes members of the support staff who demonstrate consistent excellence in the conduct of their responsibilities.

Recipients of the 2011 Zeller Awards were Patty Housner, research services assistant, and Martha Shaunessy, academic assistant.

In her 40-plus years at Bucknell, Housner has worked in nearly every department in Bertrand Library. For Research Services, she keeps statistics, hires and supervises students, updates the staff calendar, organizes events, processes gifts, runs the library's lost and found, manages key duties relating to the reference and book collections, maintains the computers and printers in the reference area, and staffs the Circulation Desk and Tech Desk until student workers arrive. She also organizes a massive effort each year to provide Thanksgiving food, coats, hats and boots, and holiday gifts to local needy families.

Shaunessy serves as academic assistant for three programs: East Asian Studies, the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Gender, and Women's and Gender Studies. She was lauded for being creative, proactive and flexible in the face of unexpected circumstances and reliable under pressure. Whenever possible and appropriate, she involves students in strategic planning and events related to the areas she serves. As a champion for diversity and inclusiveness, she works professionally and equitably with students, staff and faculty and has participated in the Memphis Civil Rights spring break trip. She also has volunteered for campus initiatives designed to inspire and guide under-represented students toward pursuing a college education, serving as the co-chair of the workplace adviser program, and as a sexual assault survivor advocate.
