Some of her most notable accomplishments include: being published in Fire and Ice, directing For Colored Girls in the spring of 2011, speaking at the Scholarship Day Luncheon in 2011, directing Night Train to Bolina in the spring of 2012, and performing in Be You [tiful] and Vagina Monologues.
"This idea came out of a very simple concept: diversifying the arts. I took two courses with Professor Meenakshi Ponnuswami, and I fell in love with the idea of having female role models within the theatre. Although theatre is an often feminized arena much like dancing, the people who are directors, playwrights, or choreographers, tend to be male. Interestingly enough, the few women playwrights I had heard of were only white or black. Longing to read a wider range of plays, I thought it would be perfect to read plays written by female playwrights of various backgrounds. I thought of women who are marginalized by their race or sexual orientation and here we are now.
Never having had the pleasure of taking a class with Professor Carmen Gillespie, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. Recommended by Professor Ponnuswami and Professor Coralynn Davis, Carmen has been a tremendous resource throughout the entire process of this independent study. She has continuously encouraged me to apply to graduate school within the next year.
The goal of this project is to provide all theatre admirers, dramatic literature fanatics, aspiring directors or actresses, and future English or Theatre majors at this institution with some reading material that may not be comforting but will change their lives.
Special thanks to all of my female role models on this campus. I would not have made it this far without all of your inspirational life lessons: Anjalee Hutchinson, Coralynn Davis, Dustyn Martincich, Meenakshi Ponnuswami, Paula Closson Buck, Shara McCallum, Dr. Nikki Young, Dr. Laura Beninati, Tracy Shaynak and, of course, Carmen Gillespie."
