LEWISBURG, Pa. — Award-winning jazz ensemble Anat Cohen Quartet will perform on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Theatre in downtown Lewisburg.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz Series. Bucknell University acknowledges with gratitude generous funding from the Family of Janet C. Weis which makes the Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz Series possible.
The Jazz Journalists Association named Cohen "Clarinetist of the Year" from 2007 through 2012, the first time in the history of the awards that an artist has earned top clarinet honors six years running.
The Washington Post said that "Cohen has emerged as one of the brightest, most original young instrumentalists in jazz ... [she] has expanded the vocabulary of jazz with a distinctive accent of her own."
Kathryn Maguet, executive director of the Weis Center for the Performing Arts, said, "Anat Cohen is the perfect artist to kick off the fall 2012 Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz series. She's the real deal. Her fresh, interesting and breathtaking performances reflect her boundary-stretching artistry as well as her highly developed and broad palate of musical expression."
Cohen has established herself as one of the primary voices of her generation on both the tenor saxophone and clarinet since arriving in New York in 1999. Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, she began clarinet studies at age 12 and played jazz on clarinet for the first time in the Jaffa Conservatory's Dixieland band.
At 16, Cohen joined the school's big band and learned to play the tenor saxophone. The same year, she entered the prestigious Thelma Yelin High School for the Arts, where she majored in jazz. After graduation, she discharged her mandatory Israeli military service duty from 1993-95, playing tenor saxophone in the Israeli Air Force band. In 1996, she matriculated at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The next event in the Weis Center's series will be a free jazz performance by the Dena DeRose Trio on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weis Center Lobby. "DeRose awes audiences with her facility on the piano, her vocal talent, and the soul that she injects into the music she performs," said Maguet. The performance is the second of three Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz Series events this semester.
