LEWISBURG, Pa. — Jeffrey Evans, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Bucknell University, has been awarded an Overseas Fellowship at Churchill College, Cambridge University, for the 2012 Michaelmas and 2013 Lent terms.

"I feel fortunate," said Evans. "It's a great academic environment with a powerful intellectual atmosphere." He will be in residence for six months at Cambridge during his sabbatical from Bucknell beginning Sept 24.

The British university system's focus on a residential academic experience will require Evans to mentor and teach graduate students at Cambridge both in and out of the classroom. He sees the fellowship as a chance to cultivate international collaborations that will bring home valuable opportunities for Bucknell students.

"There are a couple of really good potential long term benefits," said Evans. "For example, we can involve our students in research projects that are international in nature.  Also, it helps to further Bucknell University's reputation in international academic circles."

Exploring the cultural influences that affect engineering solutions around the world has been of particular interest to Evans. He helped design ENGR 290: Engineering in a Global/Societal Context, the popular three-week engineering study abroad program that has taken students to China, England, Western Europe, Norway and Sweden. Trips to Costa Rica and Argentina are planned for 2013.

A Bucknell faculty member since 1985, Evans' teaching has had a profound effect on students. Two Bucknell alumni established an endowment to benefit the University's geotechnical lab in his honor, naming it the Jeffrey C. Evans Geotechnical Lab, and he was a Class of '56 Lectureship recipient for Inspirational Teaching.

"Some think faculty need to choose between being serious and productive scholars, or excellent teachers at Bucknell," said Evans. "To me, my appointments at Churchill and Cambridge show that indeed, at Bucknell, one can successfully pursue high quality in both teaching and scholarship. The teacher-scholar model is alive and well at Bucknell."
