The Bucknell University Business Pitch Competition gives student entrepreneurs the opportunity to get expert advice from alumni and to win prizes to help them launch their ventures. The competition is held each November in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Pitch your idea for an innovative new business! Over $3,000 in prizes!
The Bucknell University Business Pitch Competition is open to full-time students at Bucknell. Students may enter and compete solo or in teams. Students may be contributing members of multiple teams, but may only be a part of the pitch presentation for one entry. Teams may include non-Bucknell student members but presenters must be Bucknell students and must play a major role in the venture ("C" level or co-founder). Entries may not have previously won a top 3 prize in previous Bucknell Business Pitch Competitions.

What goes into a presentation?

Students will develop and deliver an effective, professional business pitch presenting an innovative and marketable business concept that is both technically and economically feasible and profitable.  The business pitch will be a 5-minute creative, compelling, and concise summary of a proposed, new, or recently launched product or service.  Slides, demonstrations, and other presentation materials are encouraged. Qualifying entries will present in private to panels of judges during the preliminary round. The grand finale of the competition will be held during Global Entrepreneurship Week and feature pitch presentations from five finalists. The final event will be open to the public in the Terrace Room of the Elaine Langone Center on Bucknell's campus.

What do I need to do to get ready?

Business pitches and business plans are integral to preparing to launch your business. Entrepreneurs use business plans as a roadmap to success and pitches to convey the business concept, market opportunity, and potential profitability to investors and other sources of capital. The Small Business Development Center provides free consulting and education to help you develop your plan and prepare your pitch. Click here for great examples of elevator pitches and slide decks. Successful plans cover the:

  • Business idea and model
  • Market opportunity
  • Management and operations
  • Implementation plans and assumptions
  • Financial requirements and projections

How will the pitches be judged?

Pitches will be evaluated by a panel of judges using the following criteria:

  • Innovation - is this a new idea with potential for impact?
  • Clarity - is the presentation concise, to the point, and organized?
  • Comprehensiveness - does the presenter cover all the bases; demonstrating knowledge of the market and how the business will operate?
  • Feasibility - is this proposed venture realistic to implement?
  • Professionalism & "wow" factor - was the delivery polished and did it knock the judges' socks off?
  • Entries can also earn "bonus points" in the preliminary round by establishing an online presence for their venture and creating social media "buzz"
