LEWISBURG, Pa. — It's difficult to imagine what those who helped create this University in 1846 envisioned it would become, but their willingness to found a university in what was then called the "wilds of Pennsylvania" does tell us they believed others would rally to its side. On the doorstep of one of the most historic weekends in University history, the same confidence pervades Bucknell today — that optimism is the basis for the Campaign for Bucknell University that moves into its public phase this weekend.

"Bucknellians are doers. We learn, we imagine, we create, we lead," said Bucknell President John Bravman. "Those of us who have stepped into Bucknell's history today have both the opportunity and responsibility to ensure that this great institution continues to foster that can-do attitude and deliver excellence in higher education long after we're gone. At its core, that's what this campaign is all about."

The campaign, the University's first in nearly two decades, will publicly launch during this weekend's Homecoming 2012 celebration amid a variety of special events, which include:

  • A conversation and book signing with Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's "Mad Money," and Walter Isaacson, former CEO of CNN and author of the best-selling 2011 biography Steve Jobs.
  • A performance by renowned Delta blues and reggae artist Corey Harris.
  • Live music, theatre and dance performed by faculty and students.
  • Many other activities that are free and open to the public.

"Homecoming 2012 will be a one-of-a-kind experience," said Josh Grill, executive director of alumni relations. "We're expecting one of the largest homecoming crowds in Bucknell's history. What better time to celebrate this historic moment than while we're surrounded by family, friends and fellow Bucknellians."

The campaign's half-a-billion dollar goal makes it the most ambitious fundraising effort since the University was founded 166 years ago. The money raised will be used to strengthen current academic and residential learning initiatives, fund financial aid as never before, recruit and retain outstanding faculty, invest in new facilities, and create new initiatives key to the University's continued success as one of the finest liberal arts institutions in the country.

"We know Bucknell changes people's lives," said Bravman. "And, in turn, Bucknellians become agents of change themselves, making our world a better place. To our students today, and to the generations of students to come, we owe the best Bucknell we can imagine. With great excitement and anticipation, our community takes a momentous step toward that goal this weekend."
