LEWISBURG, Pa. — Six members of the Bucknell University staff were honored recently at the annual staff picnic with the Geiger and Zeller Awards.

Geiger Awards
The Walter C. Geiger Memorial Award recognizes members of the administrative staff who demonstrate sustained excellence and embrace Bucknell University's core competencies in the conduct of their administrative responsibilities. The award honors the late Walter C. Geiger, director of facilities.

Recipients of the 2013 Geiger Awards were Lisa Hoover, director of Publications, Print and Mail (PP&M); Rita Malick, programmer analyst for the enterprise systems team in Library & Information Technology (L&IT); and Chris Small, associate director of business services for Facilities.

Within the Division of Communications, Hoover leads the University's graphic design, printing and mailing operations. In the past year she has overseen the implementation of a pre-pay design model and is implementing a print management system to allow students to connect their computers with printers across campus. As a member of the Campus Greening Council, she led Bucknell in securing Forest Stewardship Council certification.

In her 36 years at Bucknell, Malick has played a vital role in implementing complex systems integral to the University's functions, including the Banner database. She supports technology needs, especially for Admissions, Registrar and the new Bucknell Intelligence project for student retention and performance.

Small develops, implements and supervises Facilities' internal business programs, overseeing more than 210 personnel and an annual operating budget of more than $13 million. This work impacts business and administrative services, payroll, procurement and purchasing, information technology, training, the safety program and personnel issues. Small developed and led the implementation of a new fuel contract and has participated as a leader and student mentor on two Katrina Recovery Trips to New Orleans.

Zeller Awards
The John F. Zeller Memorial Award for support staff excellence honors the late John F. Zeller, former vice president for business and fiscal affairs and general counsel emeritus. The award recognizes support staff who demonstrate consistent excellence in the conduct of their responsibilities.

Recipients of the 2013 Zeller Awards were Lisa Aversa, administrative assistant to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Denise Lewis, academic assistant to the Department of English; and Marlin Renn, operations laborer for Facilities.

Aversa was recognized for "her ability to manage numerous stages of transition, and for her creativity, focus and integrity, especially her calm professionalism and tactfulness in the very hectic pace and deadlines faced by the Dean's office."

Lewis oversees the daily operations of the English department and supports faculty in every way with helping with manuscripts to grant proposals. She is known as "an excellent communicator, nurturing, witty and warm, who does whatever the job requires to help the Bucknell community."

Renn provides general labor, custodial grounds-keeping and maintenance for the University. He was lauded for "his outstanding work ethic and his willingness to do whatever is needed, from patching walls, to moving furniture, to helping keep the grounds looking beautiful" and is described by colleagues as "one of the kindest people you would ever want to meet."

Degrees and certifications
Also recognized at the staff picnic were two members of the staff who received degrees and certifications. They were: Linda Godfrey, assistant for Religious Life, who received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Bucknell; and Kerin Goecke, coordinator with the President's Office, who graduated from Susquehanna University with a Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communications and a minor in Human Resources.

In addition, two teams of Emerging Leaders were recognized. They were: Jennifer Albright, student affairs operations administrator with the Dean of Students Office; Gregory Amarante, associate director of advancement technology with L⁢ Pam Benfer, director of business operations with the Provost's Office; Jennifer Clarke, assistant director of library collection development and access services with L⁢ Terry Conrad, manager of athletic fundraising with Development and Alumni Relations (DAR); Dean Fisher, printing production team leader with PP&M: Pamela Glass, academic assistant with Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, Spanish and Comparative Humanities; Wade Hutchison, development engineer with the College of Engineering; Michelle Imm, assistant director of prospect research and management with DAR; Jamie Lowthert, associate director of Financial Aid; Lisa Marquette, gift planning officer with DAR; Kim Schon, associate director for visitation and events with Admissions; and Carol Yost, bursar services manager with the Finance Office.
