Rich RobbinsLEWISBURG, Pa. Rich Robbins, an associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Bucknell University, has been honored with the 2013 Virginia N. Gordon Award for Excellence in the Field of Advising by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). This award recognizes a NACADA member who has made significant contributions to the field of academic advising in higher education on both national and global levels.

Robbins, who received the award in October, was cited for his "long-term service to NACADA and the advising profession in a number of capacities as well as internationally recognized expertise as evidenced by multiple publications, numerous campus consultations, and requested topical presentations at regional, national, and international conferences on this subject."

The recipient of a doctorate in social psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, Robbins served as a behavioral sciences faculty member before moving into higher education administration and adjunct teaching since 1996.

Robbins has served as chair of the Kansas Academic Advising Network, and has developed academic advising programs at two separate institutions and headed advising programs at four institutions. He teaches in the Kansas State University accredited on-line master's degree program in academic advising which includes international students, and is also a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of College Student Retention. His areas of emphasis in academic advising include evaluation and assessment, retention, undecided students, high-achieving students, research methodology, and grant writing.

NACADA service
A faculty member for more than a decade at NACADA winter and summer Institutes, Robbins also serves as co-editor of the peer-reviewed NACADA Journal. He has been a member of the Research Committee, Summer Institute Advisory Board, the Assessment Institute Advisory Board, and numerous task forces, advisory boards and committees including the Council, the Executive Board of Directors and the Academic Advising Consultants and Speakers Service.

One of two NACADA representatives on the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), he received the ACT Outstanding Institutional Advising Award in 1998, the Research Grant Award in 1999, and the Service to NACADA Award in 2011.

Robbins has more than 130 presentations at professional conferences and numerous book reviews and articles. He served as editor for the 2004 monograph Giving Advice to Students: A Road Map for College Professionals and is co-author of the 2005 CD Guide to Assessment in Academic Advising as well as the 2010 revision. He authored the chapter, "Evaluation and Assessment of Career Advising," in the 2009 NACADA/Jossey-Bass publication Handbook of Career Advising; "Generating Scholarship from Theory and Previous Research," in the 2010 monograph Scholarly Inquiry in Academic Advising; and "Accountability and Assessment of Academic Advising" in the 2011 monograph Advising Administration.

His most recent publications include "Implications of Advising Load" in the 2012 monograph based on the 2011 National Survey of Academic Advising, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Academic Advising (Almost)" in the fall 2012 edition of the Journal of College Student Psychotherapy, and co-author of the chapter, "Assessment of Peer Advising Programs" in the forthcoming fall 2013 monograph on Peer Advising.
