Martin Luther King Jr. Week

MLK

Bucknell's Martin Luther King Jr. Week is an annual campus-wide gathering that honors Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy through questioning, learning and community engagement. The week brings artists, activists, scholars, and community partners to campus for performances, lectures, workshops and discussions that connect Dr. King's vision and philosophies to contemporary struggles.

Mission

To annually provide an opportunity for reflection that encourages the Bucknell campus and larger community to actively engage Dr. King’s legacy by recognizing “a time comes when silence is betrayal” (Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence) and acting on “a common concern for the moral health of our nation.” (The Three Evils of Society). These diverse experiences and events are designed to educate on Dr. King’s historical and contemporary impact, explore issues of equity, solidarity and justice, and prompt commitments to collective action toward dismantling systems of oppression.

Due to the January 2026 snowstorm, the MLK Week keynote speaker, Anthony Ray Hinton, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 17 at 7 p.m.

MLK Week 2026

The Time Is Always Right to Do Right

Bucknell University's 2026 MLK Week theme, The Time Is Always Right to Do Right, underscores the enduring urgency of Dr. King's call to ethical action. This phrase was used in his Commencement Address at Oberlin College on June 14, 1965, titled Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution, in which he argued against passively waiting for justice and emphasized the immediate imperative to stand for what is right. The 2026 theme aims to challenge our community to attend to King's calls to reflect on and actively work toward a more just and equitable world at this moment in time, recognizing that inaction is never a neutral stance.

*Variations of these words appear in many of Dr. King's other speeches and writings.

*Please note that the "Black Legacy at Bucknell: Celebrating 150 Years of Black Excellence, Resilience, and Impact" exhibit is ongoing through Feb. 28, 2026, during library hours. The display is on Lower Level 1, the Special Collections Exhibit Area of Bertrand Library.

*Please note that the "Those We Thought We Knew: Reimagined" art exhibition is ongoing at The Samek Museum's Downtown Gallery at 416 Market St., Lewisburg, through Feb. 8, 2026, during museum hours.
