About Ronald Ziemian

Ron Ziemian is a structural engineer and a professor of Civil Engineering at Bucknell University. In addition to authoring over 100 papers on the design and analysis of steel and aluminum structures, Ron is a co‐author of the textbook Matrix Structural Analysis (Wiley, 2000), the developer of the widely-used educational analysis software MASTAN2 (mastan2.com), and the editor of the 6th edition of the highly referenced Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures (Wiley, 2010). He is an Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier’s Journal of Constructional Steel Research, and a registered professional engineer who serves as the technical consultant to the Aluminum Association. Ron is very active in the field of structural engineering and in the development of U.S. building codes, as evidenced by his many contributions as a member of AISC’s, AISI’s, and AAs’ Committees on Specifications. He chairs AISC’s TC3 - Loads, Analysis and Stability, and is the former chair of the Structural Stability Research Council. On more than fifteen occasions, Ron has been the keynote speaker at noteworthy structural engineering conferences in the U.S., China, Brazil, Lithuania, India, Portugal, Hong Kong, Czech Republic, and Malaysia. He is the recipient of several prestigious national awards, including the ASCE Norman Medal, AISC Special Achievement Award, ASCE Shortridge Hardesty Award, AISC TR Higgins Award, and the SSRC Lynn S. Beedle Award, to recognize his contributions to the profession related to the stability analysis and design of metal structures. At Bucknell, Ron has been the recipient of a Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence and a Presidential Professorship. Known for his ability to clearly explain complex topics to enhance student learning, Ron is frequently invited to deliver professional workshops and courses for practicing engineers and educators. In these, as well as in his courses at Bucknell University, he incorporates his research and state-of-the-art analysis methods, and the latest trends in structural design. Ron received his BSCE, MENG, and PhD degrees from Cornell University.
