Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Bucknell University and the Office of Financial Aid are committed to making study abroad a reality for students who otherwise could not afford to participate.

Fall/Spring Semester Programs

If you are studying abroad through a fall/spring Bucknell-approved or "Bucknell In" program, you will typically receive the same aid as if you were on campus in Lewisburg. (However, please be aware that Federal Work-study cannot be used for study abroad programs.)

If the cost of your fall/spring study abroad program is significantly higher than Bucknell's cost of attendance and you are a need-based grant recipient, you may be eligible to be considered for funding through the Global Scholars Grant Program. This aid is available to students who demonstrate financial need as determined by Bucknell's Office of Financial Aid.

If you are awarded a Global Scholars Grant and wish to reduce your Federal Direct Loans, please notify the Office of Financial Aid.

We also suggest that you apply for funding through outside agencies such as the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, Boren Scholarship and the Fund for Education Abroad, as well as your program partner. (Please be aware that if you receive outside scholarship funding after your Global Scholars Grant has been determined, we may need to adjust the Global Scholars Grant amount since total financial aid cannot exceed the cost of the program.)

If you are considering studying abroad during the academic year and finances are a concern, please contact the Office of Financial Aid so one of our associate directors can review costs and aid eligibility for you.

Summer/Winter (January Term) Short-term Programs

The Global Scholars Grant is also available to eligible students for summer and winter study abroad programs. To qualify, you must already be a Bucknell Need-based Grant recipient (have demonstrated financial need as determined by Bucknell's Office of Financial Aid) for the immediately preceding fall/spring semester(s) and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Grant eligibility for summer/winter study abroad is based on the cost of the program and financial need.

Students participating in non-Bucknell summer study abroad programs are not eligible to receive a Global Scholars Grant and/or other institutional funding.

If you apply and are accepted for a summer/winter study abroad program, we will notify you of your financial aid eligibility via email. If you are interested in knowing your estimated aid eligibility prior to applying to a summer or winter study abroad program, please feel free to contact our office at finaid@bucknell.edu.

Students may only receive summer/winter study abroad funding one time so that other students have an opportunity to study abroad.

Additional Study Abroad Program Funding Opportunities

Many of our study abroad program partners offer their own scholarships and/or grants, listed on the program partners' websites. Program partner funding typically ranges between $500 and $6,000. If you need assistance applying, please contact Bucknell's Office of Financial Aid and one of our associate directors will be happy to assist you.

In addition to funding through our program partners, we also encourage you to pursue other scholarship opportunities such as those listed below:
