April 6, 2018

Bucknell President John Bravman recently presented Professor Helen Morris-Keitel, German studies, with the 60th annual Burma-Bucknell Award, citing her commitment to expanding and improving students' study-abroad experiences.

The award recognizes an organization or University community member who has made outstanding contributions to intercultural and international understanding.

Speaking at a ceremony held March 28 at Larison Hall, Bravman explained that Morris-Keitel has worked to strengthen the University's institutional framework for study-abroad programs and has helped students who've studied off-campus process their experiences upon returning to Bucknell. "Her tireless efforts to improve students' opportunities, both coming and going, have enriched us all," he said.

Morris-Keitel received a replica of an original bowl that was presented to the University by the president of Burma in 1958 as a symbol of the historic partnership between Bucknell and the nation of Burma, now known as Myanmar. Bucknell's first international student, Maung Shaw Loo, arrived from Burma in 1858.

Bravman also presented the annual President's Diversity & Inclusion Awards, recognizing contributions to the University's efforts to build and nurture an inclusive campus community, to the following recipients:

  • Student — Anthony Scrima '18, majoring in education
  • Faculty — Professor Joel Wade, psychology
  • Staff — Rabbi Chana Leslie Glazer, Chaplain for the Jewish Community
  • Student Organization — Bucknell Advancing Communities: Educating and Serving (B.A.C.E.S), a group that conducts service trips to the Dominican Republic
  • Collaborative Team — Women in Leadership, a committee drawn from the Career Development Center, Development & Alumni Relations, the College of Engineering, the Kenneth W. Freeman College of Management and Athletics
