Bucknell University's Class of 2026 arrived in Lewisburg in fall 2022, eager for in-person connection after years of disrupted education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with Commencement coming up on May 17, the Senior Class is finalizing plans for their lasting mark on campus.
The class has chosen to contribute funding for the construction of an outdoor seating area as part of a new patio outside the Elaine Langone Center (ELC) uphill entrance, as part of the University's broader "uphill entrance project." The tribute reflects the students' desire to create an additional campus space for Bucknellians to gather and spend time together.
"The senior class considered several options for their tribute," says Brian Fritz, director of Buildings, Grounds & Garage. "In the end, I believe they really liked the idea of an outdoor gathering space in the heart of campus that will be well-utilized and highly visible."
The 3,600-square-foot patio will be located at the uphill entrance to the ELC, featuring ramp access and seating for 16 people. Construction will begin after Commencement and is scheduled to be completed by mid-August, prior to the start of the fall semester. The Class of 2026 can look forward to enjoying the finished patio and seating area when they return to campus for Homecoming in October.

Bucknell Student Government 2026 Class President Viola Geismann says the tribute aligns with the class's values. "When thinking of our class tribute, and recognizing that everyone has such a unique Bucknell experience, one aspect that stood out was the importance of building on Bucknell's tight-knit community," she says.
The project will transform the entire uphill entrance area, including new landscaping and pathways from Dent Drive to the ELC.
Bucknell Student Government 2026 Class Secretary/Treasurer Molly Woods anticipates that the space will enhance daily campus life. "The seating area is located in such a central area of the campus, so it's such a great spot for everyone to see each other during the day," she says. "I know it will be such a scenic and relaxing spot to hang out, catch up on work and have a meal with friends for many years to come."
