Cool Classes: Manufacturing Processes

February 11, 2019

by Matt Hughes

Most college mechanical engineering programs teach students to sketch products using computer-aided design software. Not every program asks students to then cast those products in molten metal, roiling at more than 2,000 degrees Celsius, but that's exactly what Bucknell mechanical engineering major Brishti Mandal '20 found herself doing on a Monday afternoon last semester.

"[I was] all by myself, all suited up," Mandal said. "That was a one-in-a-lifetime experience."

Mandal, from Kolkata, India, worked with the hot stuff in Manufacturing Processes, a class led by Professor Mala Sharma, mechanical engineering. Sharma's students take advantage of the state-of-the-art equipment in the College of Engineering's Product Development Laboratory to cast, cut and warp metal and other materials, in order to learn how products are manufactured in the real world.

Watch Mandal take an object from pixels on a computer screen to metal mold to final product in this high-tech Cool Class.
