Bucknell Initiative for Dialogue and Democracy

Cultivating Independence of Mind

The Bucknell Initiative for Dialogue & Democracy (BIDD) promotes and celebrates responsible citizenship in an interdependent global society. Participants develop practical skills and habits of mind that promote civic engagement, embrace pluralistic perspectives, respect and empathize with those holding disparate views on important issues, and advance the public good.

Cross-college Programming

BIDD brings together university leaders, faculty, visiting scholars and students to foster meaningful dialogue across differing perspectives. The initiative offers cross-college programming related to four overarching themes.

A Bigger Conversation

Strengthening the Community

In 2024, Bucknell launched Dignity & Dialogue Circles — organized sessions where people from various backgrounds and perspectives come together to discuss important topics.

These circles were the result of requests made by students, staff and faculty for more opportunities to get involved in dialogues across differences. By providing space where dignity, collaboration and empathy can thrive, these meaningful conversations foster a more inclusive and empathetic campus environment.

BIDD will build on these circles, expanding opportunities for connection and community as students learn the art of listening and understanding.

Forward, Together

Education is one of the most effective ways to create a more equitable, informed and empowered citizenry.

Through BIDD, Bucknell is cultivating independence of mind in those they serve while fostering critical dialogue and thoughtful reflection as a condition of democratic governance.

Together — in learning, exploration and conversation — our community grows.
