Student Stories

In 2020, Amanda's native country of Ghana experienced its highest voter turnout in history thanks to a biometric system that helped identify, register and verify voters using fingerprints.

But for all of its positives, biometric tech has been reported to falsely identify certain populations more than others.

Under the guidance of a professor, Amanda is investigating if a similar bias exists in wearable sensor-based gait recognition systems that identify a person by the way they walk. Amanda is working to develop and train an algorithm that will detect if certain populations are consistently mis-authenticated or misidentified.
