Is there a life-threatening medical emergency or an imminent threat to self or others?

Example: Student says, “I hate this class, I’m going to bomb it so I don’t have to go anymore this semester.”

Is the student exhibiting unhealthy psychological behavior, expressing suicidal thoughts or showing interest in counseling?

Is there a process within your department/office to resolve the situation?

Example: Student is being disruptive in the classroom setting and the behavior cannot be managed by the faculty.

Behavior that demonstrates the potential for immediate harm to self or others. If this is an emergency and you believe someone is a threat to themselves or to someone else, please call Bucknell University Public Safety at 570-577-3333 or 911. 

Examples 

• Homicidal or suicidal thoughts or threats 
• Weapons are involved, threatened or implied 
• Threats are made or implied 

Questions to help guide your decision regarding possible threatening behavior  

• Has there been any mention of suicidal thoughts, plans or attempts? 
• Has there been any mention of thoughts or plans of violence? 
• Have there been any behaviors that cause concern for violence or the person’s well-being?

Behavior that makes us feel alarmed or worried about our own or others' well-being.

Examples 

• Disheveled appearance or poor hygiene 
• Significant change in mood or affect
• Inappropriate outbursts
• Bizarre written, verbal statements or posted images
• Suspected drug or alcohol abuse, overuse or increased use of alcohol or other drugs, misuse of prescription drugs. 
• Excessive risk taking 
• Disregard for personal safety or safety of others 
• Gives away belongings 
• Talks or writes about death, suicide or having means for suicide 

Interventions 

• Consult with the CARE Team 
• Counseling & Student Development Center 
• Initiate a conversation with the individual about his/her behaviors 
• Refer the individual to the appropriate and relevant campus resources (e.g. Counseling & Student Development Center, Student Health, Public Safety, Housing Services, Residential Education, Talent, Culture & Human Resources)

Behavior that interferes with the educational process and/or work environment. 

Examples 

• A student who physically confronts another person
• A student who verbally abuses another person 
• A student who interrupts the educational process in class by making remarks out of turn, taking over the lecture or dominating class discussion 
• A student who physically acts out toward University property by breaking windows, throwing furniture or smashing doors

Interventions

• Verbal redirection 
• Talk privately (if you are comfortable doing so) with the individual in a safe place 
• Document interaction
• Consult with the CARE Team

Questions you may want to ask: 

• "It sounds like you are dealing with a lot right now, and it can be common for people to have thoughts of suicide when dealing with so much. I am wondering if you are having thoughts about ending your life right now?" 
• "Have you been thinking about how you might do this?" 
• "Have you had these thoughts and some intention of acting on them?" 

Communication and support: 

• Help 
• Use your rapport 

Help problem solve: 

• "What’s worked before?" 
• Acknowledge specific observed behaviors 
• Express empathy and concern 

A response you may want to use: 

Talk to the student privately, or if that’s not an option, consider sending an email to find a time to check in. "I’m reaching out because I noticed you have been distracted in class and you have missed a few assignments. I am worried that you might be struggling with something and wanted to see if you would like to meet during my office hours or if I can help you navigate some campus resources in any way." 

• Determine what resources are needed depending on the situation and what the student reports to you 
• Provide accurate information to the student regarding related services 

A response you may want to use: 

"Thank you for sharing with me. It sounds like you have been thinking about ending your life and thought through ways you might do so. I want to make sure I get you the help you need right now. I’m going to call the Bucknell University Counseling & Student Development Center and get us connected to a counselor."

Let the student know you care and want to help. 

• Be direct and specific 
• Normalize mental health care and help-seeking behaviors 
• Introduce seeking help as a sign of strength and courage, not weakness 

A response you may want to use: 

"I know it’s not easy to talk about what’s been going on, but I’m grateful you did. I care about you and want to make sure we can connect you to resources on campus."
