Chemistry camp at Bucknell

Do you get excited when you watch scientific demonstrations with big booms, fire and color changes? Do you want to understand how medications work or figure out how to address the global energy crisis? If so, you may be a future chemist! Explore the field of chemistry and kick-start your college experience by experimenting in real research labs with Bucknell's world-class faculty.

You'll have the opportunity to see the many different areas where chemists apply their skills, experience the latest and greatest instruments that provide scientific insight, and even get the chance to put together your own scientific demonstration.

Dates

Thursday, June 13 and Friday, June 14

  • Thursday, June 13
    • 8:15–8:45 a.m.: Arrival and check-in
    • 5 p.m.: Pick-up/end of day
  • Friday, June 14
    • 9 a.m.: Arrival
    • 5 p.m.: Families arrive for chemistry demo show and dinner
    • 7 p.m. Family dinner, depart campus

Eligibility

Chemistry Camp welcomes high school students who are entering grades 10, 11 or 12 by the summer of the camp. Campers will work as a group of peers throughout the two days.

Tuition and Aid

Tuition for a single student: $250

Tuition includes instruction from faculty and staff of the Bucknell Department of Chemistry and laboratory instructional materials, as well as several meals and snacks.

Activities and Topics

Campers will be introduced to the sub-branches of chemistry, with each featuring an overview and a lab activity guided by a Bucknell professor. Campers will have the opportunity to do hands-on chemistry and work in the lab with an experienced scientist. Topics include:

  • Organic Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry

Campers will meet Bucknell students who are studying science and spending their summer conducting exciting scientific research, and who can share insights into their lives as aspiring scientists and college students. Campers will also have professional development opportunities, including meetings with an admissions counselor and a STEM career coach.

Chemistry Demo Show and Celebration Dinner

The experience culminates with participants developing and planning a scientific demo with the support of a faculty adviser and presenting it at a closing show for an audience of faculty, staff, students and parents. The show will be followed by a dinner on campus with members of the faculty, all campers and their families. Campers are invited to bring up to two adult guests to the dinner. Children under 12 are free. An additional charge will apply for additional adult guests.

Lodging

While the camp is not an overnight camp, Lewisburg offers many hotel accommodations, things to do and places to eat. Families are invited to stay in the area while their student attends Chemistry Camp.
