Governance and Endowment Management

The Bucknell Investment Office continues to practice thoughtful fund management with guidance from the Board of Trustees' Investments Committee. Donors who give with the future in mind make an immediate, long-lasting impact that ensures the continuance of Bucknell's mission: to educate students for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership characterized by continued intellectual exploration, creativity and imagination.

Bucknell Investment Committee

The Bucknell Investment Committee is a key component of the multilevel fiduciary approach employed to steward the endowment and operating investments of the University. The committee is a subset of the University's Board of Trustees, and meets regularly with the Investment Office and external advisers to confer on the state of the financial markets and strategic positioning of the University's investments. The Investment Committee is typically comprised of six to eight voting members with strong backgrounds in various areas of investment management, including real estate, global asset allocation, individual security analysis, equity portfolio management and private equity.

Endowment Management Model

Bucknell's Approach to Endowment Management

Bucknell has constructed an endowment management model that utilizes high-quality internal and external resources. These resources include our strategic adviser, Commonfund and other best-of-breed investment firms with specialty expertise. Within this structure, several internal and external groups bring investment ideas to the University.

Goals and Benefits

The goal is to provide the University's endowed funds with the resources necessary to earn attractive long-term returns that meet the objectives of the University. Bucknell represents a key relationship for Commonfund and their senior investment team works collaboratively with the Bucknell Investment Office and the Investment Committee in a joint effort to achieve our goals.

Commonfund

Founded in 1971, Commonfund is a pioneer in long-term portfolio investment for nonprofits and other institutions. Their mission is to enhance financial resources and improve investment management practices for their clients. As a nonprofit organization, Commonfund aligns its interests with Bucknell offering custom investment advice, services and a strong working relationship of support and dedication to meet Bucknell's unique needs.

Environmental, Social and Governance Investments

Bucknell Investment Office actively and prudently engages in conversations with the internal campus community and external constituents to educate and be educated on environmental, social and governance (ESG) related topics in investments.

Since our first investment in renewable energy in 2008, the Bucknell Investments Committee (IC) of the Board of Trustees and its investment team have made significant efforts to incorporate sustainably focused practices and devoted time to a thoughtfully constructed ESG investment framework as part of its investment management process. This ESG investment framework is continuously enhanced as ESG guidelines, standards and investment markets evolve.

The IC maintains the adopted ESG investment framework and oversees the efforts of the ESG sub-committee, investment advisers and investment office in implementing the ESG framework. An ESG sub-committee of the IC executes and oversees the ESG investment framework.
