Department Descriptions

• Art & Art History

  With strong academics and excellent facilities, the Department of Art and Art History teaches creative, critical and problem-solving skills to prepare students for a future that matters globally.

   

• English/Literary Studies

  Literary Studies at Bucknell dives deeply and broadly into the incredible worlds that literature provides: from Medieval and Renaissance, through the Restoration and eighteenth century, into the Romantic and the Victorian periods, and also the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including American, British, Postcolonial and World Literatures. Our program offers numerous innovative tracks, for example, critical race & multi-ethnic studies, literature and the environment, gender and sexuality studies, and literary history and theory, which allow students to organize their course of study and seek out thematic connections. We likewise interweave numerous literary genres, such as children’s literature, poetry, drama, the novel, graphic narratives and science fiction into our offerings.

   

• Music

  The next generation of creative musicians begins at Bucknell. Our Department of Music features Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance as well as Bachelor of Arts concentrations in Contemporary Composition, Critical and Cultural Studies, and Performance. Students from across campus participate in our courses, music lessons and ensembles, including Orchestra, University Choir, Symphonic Band, Gamelan, Bucknell Voice Lab, Jazz Band and the Rooke Ringers. Our students perform and conduct research internationally and across the country, and the department sponsors over 100 on-campus performances annually, featuring collaborations with faculty, students and guest artists on our Gallery Series, Piano Series and Jazz at Bucknell series.

   

• Film/Media Studies

  Learn how to deeply engage with, understand and produce moving images. Challenge yourself to think historically, theoretically, and analytically about a wide range of audiovisual media, including cinema, television, new media and radio. Apply your knowledge to creative work made in our production classes. Take courses that range from "Film Noir" to "Montage to MTV," from "Audio-Vision" to "Practicum: Animation." Watch films at the Campus Theatre, a 1941 Art Deco movie house with 35mm film and state-of-the-art digital cinema capability. At Bucknell, you'll research moving image media's past, travel to film conferences and festivals, and bring your own vision to life with professional-level production equipment and post-production facilities. Graduates are prepared for jobs in fields such as film production or film exhibition — or in areas as diverse as academia and marketing. Arts Merit Scholarships are available to prospective students.

   

• Theatre & Dance

  We believe in creating opportunities for our students to become strong impactful leaders, engaging and innovative artists and compassionate members of a global community. Our aim is for students to develop a deeper understanding of different cultures and diverse perspectives through the eyes of artists. We train our students to express these understandings through the powerful mediums of theatre and dance. Our graduates are future artists and leaders uniting, inspiring and embracing the goal of collaborative performance. Our students embody this goal as they strive to discover and reveal the meaning in the world around us.

   

• Creative Writing

  Creative Writing majors dive into workshops in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction, experiment with craft and technique, and interact with diverse voices in contemporary literature. Benefitting from connections with Bucknell’s Stadler Center for Poetry & Literary Arts, Creative Writing majors learn to engage as ethical literary citizens by taking part in an annual reading series with literary open mics, applying for for-credit literary magazine internship opportunities and enrolling in courses that build their awareness of themselves as active, thoughtful participants in literary community, both at Bucknell and beyond.
